Witness the Signs
The Gathering of Israel: A Sign That Calls Us to Help Bring Souls to Christ
Among the latter-day signs the Savior and His prophets have named, few are as hopeful—or as personal—as the gathering of Israel. Wars can unsettle us. Calamities can humble us. But the gathering is the Lord’s invitation to join Him in the work of salvation: finding His scattered children, teaching them of Jesus Christ, binding families by covenant, and helping people on both sides of the veil come home.
Latter-day Saints hear this doctrine in Restoration scripture and living prophets. President Russell M. Nelson taught that the gathering of Israel is among the most important work on earth today—an essential prelude to the Second Coming. This article names that sign honestly and invites hope. The signs are not a countdown meant to panic us. They are a call to stand closer to Christ and help gather His people.
What the Scriptures Teach
In the Olivet Discourse, the Savior promised that the gospel of the kingdom would be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations (see Joseph Smith—Matthew 1:31). That worldwide witness is how the gathering moves: people hear of Christ, receive His restored gospel, enter covenants, and become part of latter-day Israel—those willing to let God prevail.
The Book of Mormon records the resurrected Savior teaching that the coming forth of that book would itself be a sign that the Father had begun to fulfill His covenants and gather His people from their long dispersion (see 3 Nephi 21:1–7; 29:1–2). Gathering is not a side theme; it is one of the Lord’s own announced signs that His latter-day work is underway.
The Doctrine and Covenants turns those promises into a living assignment. The Lord declares that He will gather His people “as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, even as many as will hearken to my voice” (D&C 29:2). He sends Saints from land to land bearing testimony (see D&C 66:5, 7; 133:37). He also reframes where gathering happens: stakes of Zion are “for a defense, and for a refuge from the storm” (D&C 115:6). Today gathering is less a migration to one city and more a gathering to Christ, to covenants, to temples, and to stakes in our own lands.
What This Means
President Nelson taught that gathering Israel on both sides of the veil means missionary, temple, and family history work—and also building faith in those with whom we live, work, and serve. Anytime we help anyone take a step toward covenants with God, we are helping to gather Israel.
That definition is pastoral and practical. Gathering is inviting a friend to church, indexing a name, taking a family name to the temple, or helping a child feel the Spirit. Fear does not gather Israel. Love and covenant invitation do.
President Dallin H. Oaks has explained the modern pattern: with stakes and temples in many nations, the commandment is not to gather to one place but to gather in stakes in our own homelands—where the faithful can enjoy temple blessings and find refuge. Preparation for the Second Coming remains spiritual first. If we are prepared, we need not fear (see D&C 38:30).
Recognizing the Sign in Our Day
It is faithful to notice, without sensationalism, that the gathering is visible in plain Church growth and in quiet personal stories.
As of recent Church statistical reports (2025–2026), membership stands near 17.9 million; convert baptisms in a recent year reached hundreds of thousands; missionaries serve near historic highs; and temples dedicated, under construction, or announced number in the high hundreds (often cited near 380+ combined). Stakes across the earth give local gathering places, and the gospel reaches people in a growing number of languages (see D&C 90:11).
None of these figures is offered to boast or frighten. They are a plain snapshot: prophets said Israel would be gathered, and Saints can watch that work expand. The right response is gratitude and willingness—not date-setting.
What You Can Do
If this sign stirs you, start with hope. Then choose a few concrete acts.
Pray for the gathering. Pray for missionaries, for open doors, and for courage to speak when the Spirit prompts.
Share simply. A sincere testimony of Christ, an invitation to sacrament meeting, or a link to Come Unto Christ can be enough. The Spirit does the converting.
Serve on both sides of the veil. Index names. Attend the temple. Help a new member feel belonging.
Strengthen your stake. Keep covenants. Minister. Make your home a holy place from which invitations can go out in peace.
If you are seeking, you do not need to wait until every nation has heard. The witness has already reached you. You can talk with missionaries today.
An Invitation to Join the Gathering
It is easy to treat “gathering Israel” like a slogan for someone else. Prophets invite a better frame: rejoice that the Lord is hastening His work, and join it where you live. The restored gospel does not ask you to be afraid enough. It asks you to come unto Christ—and to help someone else do the same.
You can begin today. Read 3 Nephi 21 and Doctrine and Covenants 29:1–8. Then, if you feel drawn to learn more, talk with missionaries of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They will not ask you to buy fear. They will invite you to learn of Christ, to pray, and to discover whether the Book of Mormon and the Restoration are true.
A simple place to start is the Church’s invitation to chat with a missionary or explore faith at ComeUntoChrist.org. Ask your questions. Bring your hope that God still remembers His covenants with Israel—and with you. The sign of the gathering is real. So is the invitation to be part of it.
